It can be exciting and fun in a ministry when time and discussion is focused on facility expansion. Vision planning, architect meetings, conversations focused on the future. When those initial drawings start to be disseminated, the “oooh-ing” and “aaah-ing” over them can really get people energized for growth.
But what does facility expansion have to do with school brand?
EVERYTHING! The driving purpose behind expanding a school's facility is to better serve families, and reach far more than possible otherwise. We greatly desire to share the unconditional love of our Savior through our program of Christian education with as many as possible. Without expansion, we limit the families we reach through a lack of physical space, through the limitation of resources (such as, no gymnasium), and through the lack of program (no more current room for grade levels a school would like to add).
At the same time, as a ministry transforms building vision to actual designs, the decisions behind how to use space is again driven by brand. Intentional design is given to having the building allow for further reinforcing the loving environment provided for children and families. Ministries keep in mind the unique qualities of the school that build up community and the way parents value our school, with dedicated use committed for athletics, the fine arts, before and after school care, and church youth programs. Space is designed to better support the many programs that draw large crowds to our schools, such as Christmas Programs, drama productions, music concerts, and other special and unique events. Facility expansion is not merely for the sake of more space; it is a direct expansion of the school brand’s impact.
Remember, every aspect of school ministry is to be true to brand, and in that way have the most powerful impact possible. A facility expansion project can be the most transformative experience for a school since its current building was created. Thus, tying it directly to the brand is not just a good idea, it is vital.
