We annually represent our school at the Independent Schools Fair, an annual opportunity for families to come to one location and learn about multiple private and parochial school options that exist in our community. Something really stood out as one looked at the various school booths at this past year's Fair, something true of my school's representation each year. Most other school's booths were hosted by a marketing person and maybe one other individual. One included some high school youth in their school uniforms (a K-12 program), a nice touch, but the students didn't really engage well with visitors - they looked good, but seemed uncomfortable. Then there was our Lutheran School booth, which had a host of faculty members alongside our Admissions Director throughout the day. We always had four staff members present ready to engage interested parents.
That is a key difference, and one very true to the Lutheran School brand. Our schools offers great curriculum and well-rounded programs, with an established track record of success with many very happy families. However, it's not such essential details that are key to our effectiveness. Rather, it's the relationships our staff members build with students and families. Thus, what people exploring their school options truly need to see is the people with whom school children will spend so much time. A true feel for our schools may be discovered through meeting our faculty members, hearing their heart for children and ministry, and seeing the way they connect relationally with others. The take away inquiring parents then have is a general feel for the type of people who make our Lutheran Schools tick.
The primary point on display in our community presentation is that the engagement is the most important thing. We care enough to have our faculty out on a Saturday representing our school, evangelizing for Lutheran School ministry. That's the kind of school parents who seek a caring, loving environment will be attracted to, because they had a chance to meet the people.
