The first open house we hold each enrollment season is also our largest, and serves as a significant brand event for our school. The All Families Open House is a celebration of who we are as a school, sharing this understanding amongst our current families as well as with all prospective families who stop by. Each of our classrooms prepares displays showcasing the work of our students, what we seek to accomplish in our classrooms, and the quality and character of our student body.
What I perhaps enjoy about the All Families Open House more than anything is how warm the school building is during that event, and that has nothing to do with the temperature. The families stopping by enjoy being with us, seeing all that the children have been about even as they look ahead to the classrooms they will have the next school year. The whole building is full of positive energy, as students engage with each other at the same time as parents and teachers chat away, having a great experience. It really is fun for our families to come together for this event, and even better many of them bring friends along, people with whom they’d like to share our school. I cannot think of a better event to give a prospective family a true snapshot of what Anchor is all about.
I have a clear reason for this belief: While our school covers the academics well, provides all sorts of extracurricular opportunities, and otherwise seeks to help our students grow towards success in this world, the greater part of our school is the relationships we foster. I believe this is true of most of our Lutheran Schools. We connect with people. The children come to realize just how much the faculty and staff value them, loving them all as God’s children. The parents come to grow strong relationships with the caring adults who are helping their children and partnering with the adults. And these experiences allow God’s light to shine through our staff and impact the families we serve, nurturing a growth in the relationship all parts of our school families have with our Lord.
No greater reason exists for Lutheran Schools than to lead people to a closer relationship with God. That is why our brand of unconditional love and care holds true. Staff members have that love and care from our Lord, and are inspired by that relationship to love others as deeply as we can.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
As your schools participate in open house events, remember to let that love of God in your lives shine forth as love for our students, care for the parents, patience for those who need more of that from us, and joy for the opportunity to be a part of such a place that we can share with others.
